If you live anywhere near Springfield, or really anywhere else in the country, then you've heard of Route 66! It's especially important here in Springfield because this is the birthplace of Route 66.

First of all, what is Route 66 besides a famous song? Well, to start, it was a very long stretch of highway that ran from Chicago, Illinois to Santa Monica, California. The highway was planned by two entrepreneurs, one from Oklahoma, and John Woodruff, of Springfield, Missouri!

John Woodruff was the president of the U.S. Highway 66 Association, and 66 soon grew in traffic, especially in the 1830's because of the Dust Bowl.

Route 66 also saw the first ever drive-thru restaurant! It was called Red Giant's Hamburg and opened in Springfield, Missouri. And as much as you can say you hate fast food, you know that it's a guilty pleasure you love to partake in.

Route 66 has been redesigned and reconstructed multiple times over the course of its history to assure top safety and ease of access. Over the years, many redirections have made Route 66 very different than it was originally, but it's still just as iconic. It's now part of the National

Scenic Byway. You can find a placard in Park Central Square that was dedicated by the Route 66 Association of Missouri!

The 'Birthplace of Route 66' isn't just about Route 66, though. Springfield, being the third largest city in the state of Missouri, has lots to offer. Here you'll find tons of hiking trails thanks to the short distance from the Ozarks. Be prepared to canoe, horseback ride, fish, or camp!
